TP800 System Architecture

The TP800 Turbine Protection Module is comprised of three basic components:

  • CPM810 — Common Processor Module: executes software algorithms and handles Profibus communication
  • TPM810 — Turbine Protection Module (this module): conditions and digitizes field I/O signals
  • TBU810 — Terminal Base Unit: houses CPM810 and TPM810, provides field I/O and Profibus terminations

Optional expansion modules:

  • ROM810v2 — Relay Output Module: 2 relays per module (2-Form C), 3 A @ 150 VDC / 5 A @ 120 VAC
  • ROM830 — 2oo3 Voter Module: electronic voting for redundant trip solenoids
  • PCM810 — Phase Current Module: interfaces to generator CTs for power load unbalance
  • EIM810 — Extended I/O Module: additional hardwired I/O for standalone applications
  • SIM810 — Serial Interface Module: firmware upgrade and standalone configuration

Applications

  • Steam turbine overspeed protection
  • Gas turbine protection systems
  • Hydro turbine safety systems
  • Load drop anticipation (LDA)
  • Power load unbalance (PLU) protection
  • Trip anticipation and acceleration protection
  • Standalone or DCS-integrated turbine protection

FAQ

Q: Can TPM810 operate standalone without a DCS?
A: Yes, when paired with CPM810 in the TBU810, the TP800 can operate in standalone mode using the SIM810 serial interface module for configuration via Turbine Automation Power Tools software. Profibus is not required in standalone mode.

Q: What redundancy schemes does TP800 support?
A: TP800 supports 1oo2, 2oo3 (TMR), and other common protection schemes. For SIL3 certification, a 2oo3 configuration with independent power supplies, de-energized-to-trip logic, and periodic overspeed testing is required.

Q: What is the difference between TPM810 and VPM810?
A: TPM810 is the Turbine Protection Module for TP800. VPM810 is the Valve Positioning Module for VP800. Both use the same CPM810 processor and TBU810 base but have different analog I/O circuitry for their respective functions.

Q: Is TPM810 compatible with non-ABB DCS systems?
A: Yes, the TP800 system can integrate with any Profibus DP-capable DCS platform via the onboard Profibus interface, or operate completely standalone with hardwired I/O.

Installation Guide

  1. Mount the TBU810 Terminal Base Unit on standard 35 mm DIN rail.
  2. Install the CPM810 Common Processor Module into the left slot of the TBU810.
  3. Install the TPM810 Turbine Protection Module into the right slot of the TBU810.
  4. Connect +24 VDC power supply to the TBU810 power terminals.
  5. Wire speed probe inputs (active or passive) to the designated speed input terminals.
  6. Wire digital inputs (generator breaker, turbine reset, trip functions) per the application wiring diagram.
  7. Wire analog inputs (generator MW, steam pressure) if power load unbalance or trip anticipation is enabled.
  8. Connect Profibus DP cable to the TBU810 Profibus port for DCS integration (optional for standalone).
  9. Attach ROM810v2 Relay Output Modules as needed for trip solenoid driving.
  10. Configure protection parameters via Profibus (DCS mode) or SIM810 serial interface (standalone mode).
  11. Perform overspeed test to verify proper operation of protection functions.
