TRICONEX 4211 Remote Extender Module (SRXM) — Single-Mode Fiber

The TRICONEX 4211-3 is a Remote Extender Module (RXM) set designed for single-mode fiber-optic communication in Triconex Tricon safety systems. Sold as a set of three identical modules (one per TMR channel), it enables I/O modules to be located up to 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the main chassis, providing ground loop isolation and immunity against electromagnetic interference. The 4211-3 acts as the remote endpoint, paired with the 4210-3 primary SRXM in the main chassis.

  • Model: 4211-3 (set of 3 modules)
  • Type: Remote SRXM (Single-Mode Fiber Optics)
  • Location: Remote site (paired with 4210-3 primary SRXM)
  • Cable Type: Single-mode fiber optic
  • Maximum Distance: 7.5 miles (12 kilometers)
  • Communication Rate: 375 kilobits per second
  • Connectors: ST connectors (6 total per remote location — 2 per channel, 3 channels)
  • Cabling: Uni-directional; for each TMR channel, one cable carries TX from primary to remote, and one carries RX from remote to primary (6 cables total per remote site)
  • Remote Sites Supported: n/a (this is the remote endpoint; one primary 4210-3 supports up to 3 remote 4211-3 sets)
  • Power: Backplane-powered via RXM chassis (no external power input)
  • Diagnostic Indicators: PASS, FAIL, ACTIVE, TX, RX1, RX2, RX3
  • Function: Repeater/extender for Tricon I/O bus with ground loop isolation
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to +60°C (32°F to 140°F)
  • Storage Temperature: -40°C to +75°C (-40°F to 167°F)
  • Humidity: 5–95% RH, non-condensing
  • Chassis Requirement: RXM chassis (8112 or dedicated RXM chassis)

Installation Guide

  1. Install the primary SRXM set (4210-3) in the main chassis and the remote SRXM set (4211-3) in the remote chassis.
  2. For each of the three TMR channels, connect one fiber cable from primary TX to remote RX, and one from remote TX to primary RX.
  3. Use single-mode fiber with ST connectors. Verify cable length does not exceed 12 km.
  4. Check diagnostic LEDs: PASS = link healthy, ACTIVE = communicating, TX/RX = data flow indicators.
  5. Ensure proper cable bend radius and strain relief to prevent signal attenuation.
  6. Note: Fiber-optic cabling selection and installation requires specialized knowledge. Triconex recommends hiring a fiber-optic specialist.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between 4210 and 4211?
A: The 4210-3 is the primary SRXM set (installed in the main chassis), while the 4211-3 is the remote SRXM set (installed in the remote chassis). They are paired together for each remote location.

Q: Can I use multi-mode fiber with the 4211?
A: No. The 4211 is specifically for single-mode fiber. For multi-mode fiber applications, use the 4201-3 (remote) paired with 4200-3 (primary), limited to 2 km.

Q: How many remote locations can one primary SRXM support?
A: One primary SRXM set (4210-3) can support up to three remote locations by connecting to three remote SRXM sets (4211-3).

Selection Tips

  • Select 4211-3 for long-distance remote I/O (> 2 km) where single-mode fiber infrastructure exists.
  • For shorter distances (< 2 km) with multi-mode fiber, use 4201-3 instead for cost savings.
  • Verify fiber cable quality (dB loss budget) before installation. Triconex recommends professional fiber testing.
  • Plan for spare fiber pairs in the cable run for future expansion or redundancy.
  • Each remote RXM chassis requires a unique address (2–15) that must not duplicate other chassis in the system.
